Deputy Chief Gary Peters was born and raised in the Township of Bloomfield, New Jersey. He attended Franklin Elementary School, Bloomfield Middle School, graduated from Bloomfield High School and furthered his education at Bloomfield College. Peters began his career in law enforcement in 1996, following in his father‘s footsteps, who was a Bloomfield Detective at that time.
Throughout his 30 year career with the Bloomfield PD, Peters served in every rank from police officer to detective before being promoted through the ranks from Sergeant to Deputy Chief.
In September 2007, Peters was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and served in the Patrol Bureau as a shift supervisor. In September of 2014 he was promoted to Lieutenant and served as a Shift Commander. In January of 2016 Peters commanded the Special Operations Division, comprised of the Anti-Crime Unit including the Fugitive Apprehension and Narcotic Enforcement Teams, the Traffic Unit, the Community Police Unit, and the departments Communications Unit. In 2018, he was promoted to the rank of Captain and was assigned as Patrol Bureau Commander and Special Operations Commander. In 2023 Peters was promoted to Deputy Chief of Police.
Deputy Chief Peters serves the Office of Operational Services for the department and is the senior operational commander responsible for overseeing the daily operations of uniformed personnel. This includes managing, planning and organizing patrol functions, as well as directing the activities and functions of assigned offices within the department by providing leadership to accomplish the mission, goals and objectives as defined by the Chief of Police.
Peters is an active member of the Police Executive Research Forum.
